To our Preston High School community,

This afternoon, a student inappropriately tampered with a lithium-ion battery-powered chromebook. The chromebook overheated and produced a significant amount of smoke.

Students were evacuated from the classroom and emergency services responded to the school.  Paramedics assessed all students and encouraged those with symptoms to seek medical attention at the hospital.

The room where the incident occurred is currently closed as Waterloo Regional Police Service is investigating this incident. The room will be remediated once this investigation is complete.

The school will be open and operating normally tomorrow, Tuesday, December 11th.

I want to take this opportunity to remind our students about the dangers of tampering with battery-powered electronic devices. The safety and well-being of all of our students and staff at Preston High School is my top priority.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the administration.

Paula Bender, Principal
