As we draw closer to the start of what traditionally would be the Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) spring sports season, we are providing an update on the status of school sports.

To align with announcements by Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) and Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association (CWOSSA), and the direction of the Ministry of Education and Public Health to minimize student-to-student and student-to-teacher contact and to minimize community spread of COVID-19, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has decided to cancel the 2020-21 WCSSAA spring sports season.

We acknowledge how disappointing this news will be for students and families. We recognize the important role that inter-school athletics play in the life of our students’ educational and social experience at school. Our goal is to have students participate in sports as soon as we are safely able to do so. The safety, health, and well-being of our students, dedicated staff and volunteers is our top priority.

However, we are pleased to announce that a committee of WRDSB staff-coaches has come together to explore possible virtual challenges for students to encourage active participation this spring. More details will be coming in the next few weeks and will be communicated to schools, through our website and social media channels.
