What is SHSM?

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized high school program that allows students to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while focusing their learning on a specific economic sector — a career path that matches their skills and interests.

Students receive the SHSM’s embossed seal on their OSSD when they:

  • complete a specific bundle of 8-10 courses in the student’s selected field
  • earn industry certificates like WHMIS, first aid and CPR along with sector specific qualifications
  • participate in a reach-ahead activity and career exploration activity
  • gain on-the-job skills through a cooperative education placement

What students are eligible for the SHSM program?

Grade 11 and 12 students who are:

  • heading for an apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace upon graduation from PHS.
  • wanting to identify, explore and refine their career goals and make informed choices about their post secondary options.

When should students register for this program?

Grade 11 is the time to start, new participants can sign up in Grade 12 as well.  See your guidance counsellor to create a plan when in Grade 10 as there are many components of SHSM and PHS has 4 different programs to offer.
