A Message from the Director of Education

As we look to the last month of this academic school year, I want to take the opportunity to update our community and thank all of you for your patience and support during our distance learning journey.

We appreciate your honest feedback and are committed to making the final four weeks as valuable as we can for our students. Our teachers and staff continue to reach out to students and families to ensure we are meeting your needs. We know making these connections with each and every student is key to supporting student success.

The month of June is usually the highlight of our student’s year and includes celebrations as well as graduations and school trips. Unfortunately, this year is a very different one, but we are committed as a board to celebrate the great achievements of our students and to draw attention to all our graduates who have been part of the WRDSB family.

The registration is open for our summer school programs and there is additional information below for those who may be considering updating marks or taking advantage of some extra help in certain courses.

As a community, we have all been affected in different ways during this challenging pandemic. Some have experienced unforeseen pressures and anxieties due to health and well being related to COVID-19. We want to reassure everyone that for the WRDSB, the health and well being of our students, staff and community partners remains our number one priority.

Sincerely,

John Bryant
Director of Education

Connecting from a Distance

This video series showcases Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) educators who have adjusted their typical in-person classes to a distance learning setting.

This week, we talked to Jennifer Welch, a Kindergarten teacher at Northlake Woods PS. She shares how maintaining relationships with her students has been the overall lesson in her distance learning approach. For Kindergarten students, the pandemic has been hard for them to understand why they can’t see their friends or teacher every day, so Welch came up with “Flat Mrs. Welch,” which allows her students and families to have a piece of her and stay connected.

Summer School

Registration is now open for Summer School 2020. Summer School is an opportunity for students to both improve their skills and upgrade their academic achievement. Students who are interested in registering for Summer School are encouraged to connect with their home school guidance counsellor for more information.

Communicating with our families

Curious about how you can get in touch with your teacher or school? With distance learning, it is more important than ever that we continue to nurture these relationships through open and ongoing communication between home and school.
