Dear graduating students and families,
As we approach the last few months of the school year, we have begun planning how to recognize and celebrate our students and their success, given our unique circumstances. We know that marking these key milestones in their lives is important, and so we have put our energies towards year-end celebrations for our Grade 6 students and graduation and commencement ceremonies for our Grade 8 and Grade 12 students.
To support student, staff and community safety and well-being and to ensure equity and consistency among schools, we have decided to hold all graduation and commencement ceremonies virtually for the 2020-21 school year. Grade 8 graduations will occur during a consistent timeframe near the end of June. All sixteen secondary school commencements will be held virtually and broadcasted on the evening of Thursday, June 24, 2021. More information and details will be shared in the spring through regular school and board communication channels to ensure all graduates and their families know the plans. Together with their school communities, schools will plan for a joyful celebration!
Grade 6, 8 and 12 students in the Distance Learning Program will also be included in their homeschool celebrations, graduations and commencement ceremonies.
Please know we did not make this decision lightly. We know our students, families, and staff look forward to these milestone events to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of our students. However, given the ongoing public health risk and uncertainty, we must make decisions that support the health, safety and well-being of everyone involved.
